anguage:  English  Target audience:  Academia\, industry\, public admin
Price:  Free (for eligible participants)    Organizer:  ASCFor working
on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems knowing basic Linux command l
ine commands is essential to navigate files\, launch and monitor jobs\, co
ntrol the powerful computational resources\, and automate complex workflow
s efficiently – and this is exactly what this course provides. This cours
e is targeted for our new users who might not have worked on the Linux com
mand line before. You will learn how to login to the ASC systems and step-
by-step we will show you how to work on the Linux command line and a few b
asic things that will help you to organize your workflows on the cluster.
Focusing on hands-on teaching throughout the course\, you will immediately
try out what you've heard and adapt it to your own needs. After attending
this course you are prepared for and might consider to continue with the c
ourse Introduction to Working on the ASC Clusters to be able to use the AS
C supercomputers and especially their queuing system efficiently.Agenda &
ContentFor a detailed timetable and additional information\, please see Ag
enda & Content in the left menu.Target audience\, eligibility & pricesThis
course is for users of HPC systems who need to learn the Linux command li
ne basics. This course is open and free of charge for users (or soon to be
users) of the ASC systems only.Entry level & prerequisitesBasic/beginners
 – no previous knowledge is required for this course.Course formatThis co
urse will be delivered as a LIVE ONLINE COURSE (using Zoom).Hands-on labsA
ll participants will get a temporary user account on one of the ASC system
s to do the hands-on labs. You will use your own laptop or workstation to c
onnect to ASC and do the hands-on exercises. If you use Windows please ins
tall the following software packages prior to the course: PuTTY and FileZi
lla or winscp.Accepted participants will be contacted a few days before th
e course and asked to do a short pre-assignment that has to be completed b
efore the course starts.LecturersLuis Casillas-Trujillo (ASC Research Cent
er\, TU Wien) Dr. Luis Casillas-Trujillo joined ASC in July 2024. He rece
ived his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Tennessee\, focus
ing on computational materials science. He also holds a masters degree in
applied math and technical physics from Politechnika Gdanska. For his post
doc at Linkoping University in Sweden\, he studied dislocations properties
\, focusing on the effect of magnetic disorder on the dislocation core str
ucture of iron\, and also joined the National Supercomputer Center (NSC) a
s an application expert with a focus in providing support to users that us
 e material science simulation software\, such as LAMMPS\, VASP\, and WIEN2
 k. He has vast user experience in multiple HPC centers such as NSC\, PDC\,
  HPC2N in Sweden\, LUMI\, LEONARDO\, Meluxina in Europe\, and also HPC sys
tems in the USA with NERSC and local clusters at the University of Tenness
ee. His current research interests are in machine learning interatomic pot
entials for dislocation properties in high entropy alloys.Atul Singh (ASC
Research Center\, TU Wien) Dr. Atul Singh is currently working as an engi
neer in the software team at Austrian Scientific Computing ASC\, TU Wien.
He holds a PhD as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow from the University of
Southampton\, UK\, in engineering design optimization\, and has previously
worked as an HPC specialist at the University of Nottingham\, UK. During
his MSc studies at the University of Rostock\, Germany\, he completed inte
rnships at several academic and industrial institutions\, including the Ch
air of Aero Engine Design at BTU Cottbus\, Germany\, CINECA Supercomputing
Center as a PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 participant in Bologna\, Italy\, and
Scania in Södertälje\, Sweden\, where he worked on exhaust aftertreatme
nt systems. This centers his expertise in engineering optimization\, artif
icial intelligence\, computational fluid dynamics\, and simulations to nam
